The Freisener Hoehe always belonged to the best places of discovery for agates of the Saar-Nahe region. However the find chances became ever smaller by the progressive deactivation of fields and their transformation in pastures. I could make still very good finds on the last still remaining field in the year 1998. In many collections are however classical specimen of this discovery site. The agates are usually colored brownish-red to red. Yellow or greenish colours are rarer. Holospherulitical formations* are significant for this place of discovery. They form the most unusual patterns, both which their structure, and the colours concern. A further structure-variety  frequently arising at this location is the formation of red pigmentations, crossing the common agate-banding.These formations are reminding the Gourmet from their form to a cheese fondue - which physicists remind of protuberances. All agate-collectors love to get an agate with a strongly “shadow-effect” ** from this location. Peculiar is also the occurrence of pieces of  yellow jaspers in paragenesis with metallically shining ferric oxides. This jaspis might be embedded in bluish Chalcedony. It comes here also to the formation of beautiful “Membrantruemmer-Achate”.

* these are spherulitical formations not rooting on a surface. Their crystallization took quasi free-floating in the silicic acid gel place. Furthermore this Holospherulitics were not deposited  gravitatively in layers in the lower range of the nodule, but spread in destincitve bandings

** this effect results from fine-laminated alternating transparency or opaque formed layers in the agate. If the view  of the transparent places falls, these appear dark ("shade"). Regards one the opaken layers appears these brightly. When moving the stone a shade seems to go through the inside of the stone.

This place of discovery is a topic of the article " the agates of the Freisener Hoehe” of Lapis 6/2002.
