The fields north of Leitzweiler are famous for their distinctive and typical agates. They are showing fine banding and whitish-grey to bluish colours. More rare for the location are pastels. Typically for this location are onyx- or so called “water-level-agates”. In the north-eastern part of the agate-bearing zones a common structure for agates are interchanging layers of chalcedony and phanerocristalinic quartz. This variety can produce very fine “shadow-effects” in the agates. Another structure is typical for this part: pseudomorphic formations from chalcedony after needle-like minerals (zeolithes?) . Agates from this north-eastern part are showing morphological similarities to the water-worned agates from Arenrath, about 100 km away from this place.

In the year 2003 windmills to produce electricity were erected in Leitzweiler. For getting hard rocks as building-material for the roads, a small quarry was opened. In April 2003 hundreds of large nodules were collected - but most of them were filled up with not well defined and chaotically structured white and chalky agate. Only a few of these nodules did show awesome geodes of smoky-quartz - or, as present for the more sophisticated collectors - nicely structured pseudomorphical formations from chalcedony after aragonite. This quarry was the source for the first specimen of common opal found in the Saar-Nahe-Region. In veins up to a width of 8 cm whitish to greenish common opal - structured with black dendritic formations - did show up.
