Fairburn-agates are belonging to the finest american agates that agate-collectors in the USA desire for their collection. These agates are showing everything an agate collector is searching for: intensively colours, a strong contrast between the agate-bandings and a sharp-edged fortification pattern. These agates got their name after the town Fairburn, neigboured to the first agate-findings of these type. Fairburn agates can be found today very rarely in the badlands-area in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming.
In the 1950ies to 1970ies people liked to thumble every fairburn they could find, to show the fine colours in a shiny polishing. Today the collectors don´t treat the agates in any way - a perfect Fairburn is left in natural shape and conditions.
More information about these agates is given by Roger Clark in its book “Fairburn Agate - the gem of South Dakota” (2002)
